Sony Pictures has confirmed plans to reopen Hollywood's iconic Cinerama Dome in early 2028, with its subsidiary Alamo Drafthouse set to operate a revived version of the neighbouring former Hollywood Arclight complex. The single-screen Dome, a Los Angeles Historical Cultural Monument, has sat closed since it shut during the Covid-19 pandemic six years ago, and its return marks a significant moment for cinema exhibition and for Sony's continued investment in Hollywood.

Restoration work on the Dome begins next month and will preserve its distinctive curved 86-foot screen, traditional concessions and large-format 70mm presentation capability, rather than converting it into a dine-in venue. The adjoining 14-screen former Arclight building will instead become an Alamo Drafthouse, bringing its trademark dine-in service and curated repertory, filmmaker and premiere programming, alongside 35mm and 4K laser projection facilities. Sony and Alamo Drafthouse have signed a long-term lease with Robertson Properties Group to operate the two venues, with Sony chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja and motion picture group chairman Tom Rothman both hailing the move as a landmark moment for the industry and the city.
