A South African court has temporarily stopped a parliamentary inquiry into whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should face impeachment over the “Farmgate” cash scandal. The decision gives Ramaphosa time to challenge an earlier panel report and delays a politically sensitive process as his ANC now governs in coalition rather than with a parliamentary majority.

The case concerns a 2020 burglary at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm, where thieves allegedly took $580,000 (£430,000) in cash hidden in a sofa. An independent panel said in 2022 that he may have a case to answer, while Ramaphosa denies wrongdoing and says the money came from buffalo sales; the court ruled 2–1 that the inquiry must pause until his separate legal challenge is decided, with a hearing due in September.
