South Korean TV drama production at risk of collapse, industry groups warn
Twelve South Korean industry groups warned that the country’s television drama production base is at risk and urged the government to create a 1 trillion won (US$746 million) fund. They say fewer productions threaten opportunities for emerging writers, actors and crew, despite K-dramas’ global popularity.
Research cited by the groups shows production fell from 141 titles in 2022 to about 115 in 2025, while three domestic networks reduced output from 91 dramas in 2012 to 32 in 2023. The groups blame rising costs, competition for star talent, broadcasters’ reduced investment and audiences shifting to short-form content and AI. A university professor said the concerns largely reflect declining terrestrial broadcasting; overall content-industry employment rose slightly in 2025, although broadcasting employment fell 2.3 per cent in 2024.
In short
- Industry groups say South Korea’s drama production base is at risk.
