Axel Rudakubana, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the Southport dance-class murders, appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court facing charges linked to alleged attacks on staff at Belmarsh prison. The case matters because it involves further alleged offences committed while he was imprisoned, including violence and possession of a weapon.

The charges include attempting to cause grievous bodily harm in May 2025, possessing stone shards as an offensive weapon in June 2025, and assaulting an emergency worker in October 2025. Rudakubana, now 20, was convicted of murdering three children and attempting to murder eight other children and two adults during the July 2024 attack; he was later transferred to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, where offenders may receive compulsory treatment under the Mental Health Act.
