‘Spaceballs: The New One’ Invades Comic-Con With Send-Up Of Marvel’s Hall H Panels Of Yore
Amazon MGM Studios used its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con to promote ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ with a parody of Marvel’s elaborate franchise-announcement panels. The event underscored the sequel’s intention to revive Mel Brooks’s satirical approach, targeting modern blockbuster culture as well as the ‘Star Wars’ conventions mocked by the 1987 original.
The presentation displayed a fictional “Spaceballs Cinematic Universe” spanning 11 phases, including musicals and unconfirmed releases. Rick Moranis appeared unexpectedly among fans and received a standing ovation, while Josh Gad said the film is a love letter to John Candy and confirmed he plays a new mog rather than Candy’s character Barf. Mel Brooks, aged 100, sent a comic video message and will return as Yogurt; Bill Pullman also returns, with his son Lewis playing Lone Starr’s son, Starburst.
