SpaceX has officially acquired AI coding startup Cursor

Engadget · 2 hours ago

SpaceX has completed its acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding startup, following an announcement in June and earlier collaboration on model training. The deal matters because Cursor says access to SpaceX’s extensive computing resources could let it develop stronger AI models while reducing costs for customers.

SpaceX reportedly paid $60 billion and had already merged with Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, now known as SpaceXAI. Cursor and SpaceXAI have since released Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6, with the latter aimed at practical tasks including coding, web development and computer-aided design.

  • SpaceX has completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor.
  • Cursor expects greater computing capacity and lower AI-model costs.
  • Joint Grok models target coding and other workplace tasks.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Supporters argue that combining Cursor’s coding expertise with SpaceXAI’s computing capacity could speed the development of more capable, practical AI tools for programmers and engineers. They see the deal as a way to lower operating costs, improve access for customers and support ambitious work in fields such as software development and computer-aided design, where stronger models may deliver real productivity gains.

The case against

Critics argue that placing a prominent AI coding company inside a large Musk-led technology group may further concentrate computing power, data and product influence in too few hands. They contend that independent startups can provide valuable competitive pressure and alternative approaches, and worry that a $60 billion acquisition could reduce choice for customers or make the direction of widely used coding tools more dependent on one corporate ecosystem.
