SpaceX signs deal with Qualcomm to provide network technology for U.S. mobile service
SpaceX has struck a multiyear deal with Qualcomm to supply network technology for Starlink Mobile, its planned US mobile service. The terrestrial network is intended to complement Starlink’s satellites, with rollout due to begin next year, as SpaceX moves to compete with established mobile carriers.
The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed. Starlink generated 36% of SpaceX’s revenue and 85% of its operating profit in the third quarter, but its satellite service has not matched rivals’ voice, video and data coverage on popular smartphones. SpaceX has also agreed to buy a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio and is reportedly in talks to acquire Boost Mobile.
In short
- Qualcomm will help build Starlink Mobile’s US network.
- Rollout is planned to begin next year.
- SpaceX is pursuing spectrum and carrier assets.
