SpaceXAI says it will take until July 2027 to remove 69 unpermitted gas turbines used for data-centre operations near Memphis, Tennessee. The turbines are central to an NAACP lawsuit alleging Clean Air Act violations and harmful pollution exposure for nearby communities, making their removal significant for local environmental and public-health concerns.

Removal is due to begin in August 2026 under an agreement with Mississippi environmental regulators, while a permitted 1.2GW Mississippi power plant is built to replace the temporary generation. SpaceXAI says local air quality meets or exceeds EPA standards, although the lawsuit remains active after a Justice Department bid to dismiss it; the company is also continuing to expand its AI data-centre capacity through agreements with Anthropic and Google.
