Starship’s 13th test deploys 20 V3 Starlink satellites

SpaceX has launched the 13th test flight of its Starship rocket, carrying 20 next-generation V3 Starlink satellites for the first time. The mission matters because it is intended to test both higher-capacity satellite technology and Starship’s progress towards rapid reusability, rather than immediately expand Starlink service.
The V3 satellites are designed to provide up to 1 Tbps of downlink capacity and 160 Gbps of uplink capacity—respectively 10 and 22 times the capability of V2 satellites. They will test their solar arrays, antennas and laser links before re-entering and burning up around 20 minutes after deployment; two modified satellites will also photograph Starship’s heat shield. This is the second flight of the V3 Starship design, following its debut test in May.
