Spain’s Indie Distribution Surges but Large Challenges Remain, Highlighted at Valladolid’s Merci Market
Spanish independent film distributors reported a 45% rise in box office receipts through September, and the success of “La Bola Negra” has added to the momentum. At Valladolid’s Merci market, however, industry figures said stronger takings have not solved problems with crowded release schedules, limited cinema screens and uncertain bookings, which can make it harder for mid-range films to reach audiences and turn a profit.
The sixth Merci market brought together about 215 professionals, up from 190 last year, to consider how cinemas and streaming platforms can support a wider range of films. Buyers from RTVE, Movistar Plus, Filmin and HBO joined others to view 26 films scheduled for Spanish release from late 2026 to mid-2027. Participants backed theatrical runs but differed over how long films should remain cinema-exclusive, with some warning that lengthy gaps before legal streaming can leave films unseen or encourage piracy.
In short
- Independent distributors’ box office receipts rose 45% through September.
- Industry figures say crowded schedules and scarce screens threaten smaller films.
- Merci drew 215 professionals to discuss releases and cinema-to-streaming windows.
