Shanise Hussain, 27, has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after speeding in her Audi A3, losing control and killing a pedestrian on a pavement in Birmingham. She was driving at 48mph in a 30mph zone on Great Hampton Street when she swerved to avoid another vehicle, veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into a central reservation, striking two passers-by. The case highlights the devastating consequences dangerous driving can have on innocent bystanders and has prompted police to renew calls for road safety awareness.

Maurice Middleton, 68, died at the scene, while a second pedestrian suffered minor head and hand injuries; a parked car was also damaged. Hussain, of Handsworth, stayed at the scene to assist West Midlands Police and was later convicted of causing death by dangerous driving at Birmingham Crown Court, receiving a four-year-six-month sentence and an eight-year-three-month driving ban. Mr Middleton's family described him as "the glue that held us all together", while Detective Sergeant Richard Evans urged drivers to remember the life-changing consequences of decisions made behind the wheel.
