‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Production Designer On Yelena’s Bathhouse, Peter Parker’s Sad Pad & The Challenge Of Building New York In The U.K.
Production designer Charles Wood said Spider-Man: Brand New Day aims for a grounded, street-level version of Peter Parker’s world, despite its comic-book setting. The design centres on Peter’s isolation after losing those closest to him, using his new flat as both a sanctuary and a prison while making New York feel close but emotionally out of reach.
Wood’s team recreated New York in the UK, researching locations such as bodegas to make them feel authentic while adding subtle graphic-comic influences. They also built Yelena’s elaborate bathhouse from scratch based on New York scouting, and designed Jean Grey’s containment room to appear domestic before revealing a more threatening purpose; sets and props were made functional to support Tom Holland’s immersive performance style.
- The film uses design to show Peter Parker’s loneliness.
- New York was recreated in the UK with extensive research.
- Key sets include Yelena’s bathhouse and Jean Grey’s containment unit.
