‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Michael Mando on Finally Returning as Scorpion: “This Is Level One of the Character’s Potential”
Actor Michael Mando is reprising his role as Mac Gargan/Scorpion in the upcoming Spider-Man film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe nearly a decade after his introduction in 2016's Homecoming. Originally imprisoned following an arms deal with the Vulture, Gargan's initial post-credits appearance suggested the character might reveal Spider-Man's secret identity, a storyline that ultimately went unrealised as subsequent films took different narrative directions.
In Brand New Day, Scorpion appears within a montage depicting years of Spider-Man's crime-fighting activity and plays a more central role in the film's main plot. Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, enlists Gargan to help rescue her imprisoned sister from the Department of Damage Control, leading to an action sequence where Spider-Man confronts Scorpion whilst under Jean's mind control. Mando has characterised his return as an initial exploration of the character's capabilities, indicating that Scorpion may undergo further development in future appearances.
In short
- Michael Mando returns as Scorpion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after a nine-year absence from the franchise
- The character serves an expanded role in the new film, appearing in a time-passage montage and assisting Jean Grey's rescue mission
- Mando describes his return as 'Level One' of Scorpion's potential, suggesting further character development may lie ahead
Explained simply
Mac Gargan, known as Scorpion, is a Marvel comic-book villain who has faced Spider-Man. Michael Mando first played him in the 2016 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Gargan was jailed after taking part in an illegal arms deal with the Vulture.
A brief scene after the credits hinted that Gargan might learn Spider-Man’s real identity, but later films did not follow that story. His return brings the character back into the film series after a long gap, with a larger part in the new film’s plot.
The story also involves Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, and the Department of Damage Control, a government body that deals with threats linked to superheroes. Scorpion’s renewed role may give the films room to develop his character further.
