‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Michael Mando on Finally Returning as Scorpion: “This Is Level One of the Character’s Potential”

The Hollywood Reporter · 4 hours ago

Actor Michael Mando is reprising his role as Mac Gargan/Scorpion in the upcoming Spider-Man film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe nearly a decade after his introduction in 2016's Homecoming. Originally imprisoned following an arms deal with the Vulture, Gargan's initial post-credits appearance suggested the character might reveal Spider-Man's secret identity, a storyline that ultimately went unrealised as subsequent films took different narrative directions.

In Brand New Day, Scorpion appears within a montage depicting years of Spider-Man's crime-fighting activity and plays a more central role in the film's main plot. Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, enlists Gargan to help rescue her imprisoned sister from the Department of Damage Control, leading to an action sequence where Spider-Man confronts Scorpion whilst under Jean's mind control. Mando has characterised his return as an initial exploration of the character's capabilities, indicating that Scorpion may undergo further development in future appearances.

  • Michael Mando returns as Scorpion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after a nine-year absence from the franchise
  • The character serves an expanded role in the new film, appearing in a time-passage montage and assisting Jean Grey's rescue mission
  • Mando describes his return as 'Level One' of Scorpion's potential, suggesting further character development may lie ahead
