United adds Spotify streaming to seatback screens using Starlink Wi-Fi
United Airlines has launched a Spotify app for seatback screens, letting passengers sign in to their own accounts and stream music, playlists and video podcasts in flight. The service runs over Starlink Wi-Fi, which United is installing across its fleet, and points to a shift from entertainment stored on aircraft to personalised streaming.
United says Starlink’s speed, reliability and global coverage, including near the poles, make uninterrupted streaming possible. Starlink operates more than 11,000 low Earth orbit satellites; passengers can also use Spotify on their own devices. United plans to use the partnership as a model for other streaming apps, while airlines including American, British Airways and Lufthansa are also adopting satellite Wi-Fi.
In short
- United passengers can stream their Spotify accounts on seatback screens.
- Starlink Wi-Fi enables the service and is being installed across United’s fleet.
- United says the Spotify integration could pave the way for more apps.
