Spotify is implementing labels for AI-generated artists starting next month, marking them as "AI personas" and blocking them from the platform's personalised recommendation system. The policy responds to escalating problems with artificial music flooding the service—the company removed 75 million spam tracks over the past year—and aims to restore listener trust by clearly distinguishing human artists from algorithmic creations.

Rather than relying on voluntary disclosure, Spotify will use human review and AI tools to identify fake artists. The move was spurred by well-publicised examples including The Velvet Sundown, which falsely presented itself as a genuine 70s rock band, and Sienna Rose, an AI-generated soul singer who achieved viral success without ever performing live. By blocking AI artists from recommendations, Spotify aims to prevent real musicians from losing revenue to synthetic competitors lacking authentic creative effort.
