Springboks call on experienced lock Etzebeth ahead of France clash
South Africa have recalled veteran lock Eben Etzebeth for their Nations Championship matches against France and Ireland after Salmaan Moerat withdrew with back spasms. The call-up gives the Springboks added experience and leadership as they prepare for two important fixtures.
Etzebeth, 35, had initially been ruled out of the November internationals through injury, but could go straight into the matchday 23 against France. He has made a record 147 Test appearances for South Africa. Uncapped fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed, 20, has returned home with a shoulder injury, and the team does not plan to call up a like-for-like replacement.
In short
- Etzebeth has rejoined South Africa’s squad for the France and Ireland matches.
- The 35-year-old is the most-capped Springbok, with 147 Tests.
- Ahmed has gone home injured, with no fly-half replacement planned.
