Squadron 42 delayed to 2027, with Star Citizen dev blaming GTA 6
Cloud Imperium Games has postponed Squadron 42, the single-player Star Citizen spin-off, from 2026 to the second quarter of 2027. Studio head Chris Roberts said a launch alongside Grand Theft Auto 6 would leave little room for media coverage and public attention, making the delay significant for a game that has spent more than a decade in development.
The studio had previously planned a fourth-quarter 2026 release and will now show the game to a small group of creators and early backers in October, with a more precise date to follow. Squadron 42 began development in 2014, has missed several targets, and features actors including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill and Henry Cavill; meanwhile, Star Citizen passed $1 billion in crowdfunding in May.
- Squadron 42 is now planned for spring 2027.
- Chris Roberts cited competition for attention from GTA 6.
- The game has been in development for over 12 years.
