GSC Game World sets 20 August date for STALKER 2 expansion

GSC Game World has confirmed that STALKER 2's paid story expansion, Cost of Hope, will launch on 20th August alongside the free Update 2.0. The expansion sends players into the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant for the first time since 2008's STALKER: Clear Sky, set against a bitter falling-out between the game's rival Freedom and Duty factions, while Update 2.0 shifts the base game onto a newer, more stable version of Unreal Engine 5. The pairing matters because it delivers substantial new story content alongside a significant technical overhaul for a game whose rocky 2024 launch has been steadily patched up over the past year and a half.
Cost of Hope, first announced in March, introduces new threats including an armoured humanoid "berserker" mutant, and its August release keeps GSC within the Summer 2026 window it originally promised. Update 2.0 will move the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5, a change expected to improve performance, lighting and stability, alongside rumoured refinements to the game's A-Life NPC simulation system, though such a substantial engine swap also carries some risk of introducing fresh technical issues.
