‘Star Trek’ Prequel Series Officially Gets an Update Amid the Franchise’s Uncertain Future

Collider ·

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Henry Alonso Myers says the proposed prequel spin-off Star Trek: Year One remains possible, but Paramount has not made a decision. The project would continue the Enterprise’s story under James T. Kirk before The Original Series, potentially offering the franchise a future as Strange New Worlds approaches its final season.

Myers and producer Akiva Goldsman have formally pitched the series and are ready to proceed if Paramount approves it. Although props, costumes and some sets were auctioned, Myers said Paramount still owns the Enterprise sets, which have been moved elsewhere; the decision now rests with the studio as it considers Star Trek’s wider direction following the cancellation of Starfleet Academy.

  • Star Trek: Year One has been pitched but is unapproved.
  • Paramount still owns the Enterprise sets.
  • Strange New Worlds ends after a shortened final season.

New here? Start with this

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the crew of the starship Enterprise, led by Captain James T. Kirk, on voyages through space. Strange New Worlds is a prequel, set earlier in the Enterprise’s history, with a different captain and some familiar crew members.

Year One has been proposed as a further prequel, following Kirk and the Enterprise before the events of The Original Series. Its producers have pitched the idea to Paramount, the studio that controls the franchise, but it has not approved the project. The Enterprise sets remain owned by Paramount, though some Star Trek props, costumes and other items have been auctioned.

The proposal comes as Strange New Worlds nears its final season and Paramount considers the franchise’s future after cancelling Starfleet Academy. Whether Year One moves forward depends on the studio’s decision.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Approving Year One could preserve momentum for a series with an established creative team, familiar characters and a setting that extends Strange New Worlds’ story. Since the Enterprise sets remain available, Paramount may be able to build on existing production resources while giving viewers a clear continuation as the current series ends.

The case against

Paramount may reasonably wait before committing to another prequel, particularly after cancelling Starfleet Academy and while it reassesses the franchise’s direction. A new series would require investment and could keep the slate focused on familiar eras and characters, so the studio might prefer to consider projects that offer a more distinct direction.
