Peck said he was repeatedly directed not to play Spock as too friendly towards Kirk, since the character respects him but "doesn't quite like him yet", despite the genuine off-screen chemistry between the two actors. Wesley recalled feeling immense pressure filming Kirk and Spock's first meeting before a director reassured him the moment didn't need to carry full weight yet, and he singled out an upcoming "shore leave" episode, in which Spock shows Kirk vulnerability, as a key step towards their eventual friendship. The cast also reflected on why the series still feels distinctly like Star Trek despite jumping between genres such as horror and comedy, crediting a shared sense of exploration, curiosity, hope and purpose among the cast and crew.
