Disney has set Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu for a global Disney+ release on 2 September, 103 days after its cinema debut. The move brings the film back to the streaming platform where the Mandalorian franchise began, following a theatrical run that underperformed by live-action Star Wars standards.
The Jon Favreau-directed film opened with $167 million worldwide over Memorial Day but finished on $345 million globally, against a reported $165 million production budget before marketing. It was the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film to date, despite audience and critic scores of 86% and 60% respectively; Disney and Lucasfilm will look to next year’s Ryan Gosling-led Star Wars: Starfighter to help revive the franchise’s cinema prospects.
- The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on Disney+ on 2 September.
- Its $345 million box office total was a franchise low.

The Mandalorian is a Star Wars series created for Disney+ by Jon Favreau, set after the fall of the Galactic Empire. It follows Din Djarin, a helmeted bounty hunter, and Grogu, a young character with a connection to the Force.
Disney owns Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, and has used the franchise across cinema and streaming. The Mandalorian was one of Disney+’s early flagship series and helped introduce Grogu to a wide audience.
The film is part of Disney and Lucasfilm’s effort to bring Star Wars stories back to cinemas while maintaining the franchise’s streaming presence. Its performance is closely watched because large-scale Star Wars films are expensive to make and remain important to Disney’s wider entertainment business.
