Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled first footage from “Star Wars: Starfighter” at D23, showing Ryan Gosling as pilot Kade Auberon alongside a young companion. The film is significant as the first standalone Star Wars feature set after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker”, marking the franchise’s return to a new era of big-screen storytelling.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, “Starfighter” is scheduled for cinema release on 28 May 2027, exactly 50 years after the original “Star Wars” opened. The teaser featured a restored, exceptionally fast decommissioned fighter, alien ocean geysers, attacking droids and Kade’s robotic co-pilot; filming in Sardinia may give the film a visual identity distinct from earlier Star Wars settings. Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams are among the supporting cast.

Star Wars is a long-running science-fiction series set in a galaxy where planets, spaceships, droids and alien species are central to the story. Its best-known films followed the Skywalker family, whose conflict with the authoritarian Empire and later the First Order shaped much of the series.

Disney has owned Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, since 2012, and has produced films and television series set at different points in the fictional timeline. The 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker concluded the most recent trilogy centred on the Skywalker family.

A standalone film uses the same fictional world but focuses on different characters and does not need to continue one family’s story directly. A new setting after The Rise of Skywalker may show how the franchise develops its future era on cinema screens.
