The Mandalorian and Grogu will begin streaming on Disney Plus on 2 September, following its cinema release in May. The move returns the characters to the platform where they first became popular and broadens access to the film after its paid digital and physical releases.

The film reached $345 million worldwide, roughly 100 days after its theatrical debut, but earned substantially less than 2020’s The Rise of Skywalker, which exceeded $1 billion. It is already available to buy digitally, while 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and collector editions are due on 25 August; reviews were mixed to positive.

The Mandalorian and Grogu are characters from the Star Wars franchise, which is owned by Disney. They first appeared in The Mandalorian, a television series made for Disney Plus and set after the events of the original Star Wars films.

The Mandalorian, also known as Din Djarin, is a bounty hunter who becomes responsible for Grogu, a young member of the same species as the character Yoda. Their relationship became the centre of the series, which helped establish Disney Plus as a major home for new Star Wars stories.

The new film is part of Disney’s wider effort to bring Star Wars characters from streaming television to cinemas. Its release also comes as the franchise continues to balance cinema films, series and home entertainment releases for audiences around the world.
