Starlink Mobile: All the news on SpaceX’s major mobile carrier ambitions
SpaceX has announced plans to turn Starlink Mobile into a major US mobile carrier, putting it in competition with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. The move would expand Starlink beyond its direct-to-cell satellite service and require the company to build a substantial ground-based 5G network.
SpaceX has agreed to use Qualcomm cellular technology across tens of thousands of 5G sites from 2027, and reports say it may seek access to as many as 80,000 US cell sites. It is also reportedly discussing a purchase of Boost Mobile, which could provide a route to launch the service. Deutsche Telekom chief Tim Höttges said he takes the ambitions seriously and estimated they could cost more than $200 billion.
In short
- SpaceX aims to make Starlink Mobile a major US carrier.
- Qualcomm technology is planned for 5G sites from 2027.
- Deutsche Telekom’s chief says the effort could cost over $200 billion.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A Starlink Mobile network could add a strong new competitor to a market dominated by a few large carriers, giving customers more choice and potentially putting pressure on prices and service quality. SpaceX could combine its satellite coverage with ground-based 5G to reach places conventional networks serve poorly, while investment in new infrastructure may spur innovation.
The case against
Building a national 5G network would require enormous investment and access to many cell sites, making the plan costly and difficult to execute; the reported estimate of more than $200 billion underlines the scale of the challenge. A new entrant could also struggle to match established carriers’ coverage and reliability, and its expansion might divert resources or customers without delivering lasting improvements in competition.
