State representative defeats former House Republican in primary for Rose’s open seat in Tennessee
Tennessee state representative Johnny Garrett won the Republican primary for the open 6th Congressional District seat, defeating former US representative Van Hilleary. The result makes Garrett the Republican nominee to succeed John Rose, who is leaving Congress to run for governor, and is significant because the district is strongly Republican.
Garrett, a lawyer and Air Force veteran who has represented a state House district since 2019, faced Hilleary, a former congressman and Rose’s former chief of staff. The contest featured two candidates presenting conservative, pro-Trump credentials; Garrett’s campaign was bolstered by substantial personal funding. He will now advance to the November general election.
