US federal agents have arrested a 21-year-old Florida man accused of helping to distribute cryptocurrency-stealing malware through games on Steam. The case matters because it alleges that apparently legitimate games on a major PC gaming platform were used to compromise users’ devices and financial accounts, highlighting risks from malicious software in game downloads.

Investigators allege that eight infected games compromised about 8,000 devices between May 2024 and February 2026, enabling access to roughly 80 cryptocurrency wallets and thefts worth at least $220,000. The suspect faces a charge of conspiracy to obtain information by computer for private financial gain; the allegations have not been proven in court.
