Musician Steve Lacy has released his long-awaited album "Oh Yeah?", following a difficult, years-long creative process he first discussed with Rolling Stone during his cover story a year earlier. Lacy explained that the record began as a much sadder collection of songs, written in the aftermath of a breakup, before shifting tone as his personal life changed and he began a new relationship, allowing the album's narrative to develop in real time rather than being forced into shape.

The process took nearly three years, with Lacy writing and recording across Los Angeles, the Village studio, and extended stays in Paris after his 2022 Grammy-winning breakthrough "Gemini Rights". He described repeatedly believing the album was finished only to scrap those attempts, eventually abandoning efforts to sequence the record in advance and instead focusing purely on writing until a coherent story emerged. Lacy, previously more focused on production than lyrics, called it one of the hardest albums he has made, reflecting a broader shift in how he approaches songwriting and what he wants from his music.
