Stevie Nicks publicly criticised Mick Fleetwood over a dispute concerning the rights to her Fleetwood Mac song “Silver Springs”, calling his treatment of the matter “vile”. The disagreement contributed to her leaving the band in 1991 and illustrates the tensions over songwriting and commercial control within Fleetwood Mac.

“Silver Springs” was omitted from the 1977 album Rumours and instead released as the B-side to “Go Your Own Way”, despite being written about Nicks’ relationship with Lindsey Buckingham. Around 20 years later, Nicks wanted to use it on her Timepiece compilation, while Fleetwood Mac retained the rights and considered it for a 25th-anniversary release. Nicks and Fleetwood later reconciled, and the band reunited by 1997.
