Stone to be laid for Mobo founder Kanya King
A commemorative stone will honour Mobo founder Kanya King in London, marking 30 years since she launched the awards. King helped bring black music and culture into the UK mainstream, and the tribute recognises her lasting influence.
The stone will be unveiled on 18 November at Queens Park Community College, her former school in north-west London. King, who died this summer aged 57 from colon cancer, famously remortgaged her home to fund the first Mobo awards in 1996 and received a CBE in 2018. Anniversary events also include a BBC programme airing on 11 November and a temporary display of Mobo archive memorabilia at V&A East Storehouse.
