Storm Austen hits UK as yellow wind warnings in effect

BBC Science ·

Storm Austen is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the UK, with an amber warning in parts of south-west England and yellow warnings across much of England, Wales and parts of Scotland. The weather could disrupt travel, damage trees and cause power cuts, while heavy rain in Scotland may lead to local flooding.

Gusts of 60 to 70mph are forecast in Cornwall and parts of Devon, reaching 80mph in exposed places; wider areas could see 45 to 60mph gusts. Some schools have closed or delayed opening, and rail services and ferry crossings face disruption. Storm Boelo is expected to bring further wet and windy weather over the weekend, with gusts of up to 80mph in exposed locations; storms often arrive in clusters when a strong jet stream helps low-pressure systems develop.

In short

  • Storm Austen brings damaging winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK.
  • South-west England faces gusts up to 80mph in exposed places.
  • Storm Boelo is forecast to bring more disruption over the weekend.
