Storm Boelo strikes UK one day after Storm Austen: 80mph winds hit ferries and trains with more homes facing power cuts as Met Office issues rare amber alert
Storm Boelo has brought the UK its second named storm in two days, with heavy rain and winds expected to reach 80mph in places. Amber and yellow weather warnings cover parts of the north, while disruption to ferries, trains and roads is expected; organisers have also cancelled a marathon in Eryri National Park.
Boelo follows Storm Austen, which hit the South West and left more than 3,700 homes without electricity on Saturday morning, after engineers restored power to over 60,000 homes. Austen also damaged Brighton’s historic West Pier and caused other damage. Rainfall on higher ground in Scotland could exceed 100mm in a day, while forecasters say much of England and Wales should be brighter on Sunday.
In short
- Storm Boelo brings strong winds and heavy rain to northern areas.
- Travel disruption and power cuts are expected.
- Scotland could see more than 100mm of rain on higher ground.
