RTÉ aired a documentary featuring a Garda whistleblower despite repeated warnings from the Director of Public Prosecutions and Garda management that it could prejudice an upcoming firearms trial. The programme was removed from RTÉ’s Player and platforms 48 hours later, amid fears that publicity could prevent a fair trial or cause the case to collapse.

The trial, which has reportedly been adjourned 28 times, is scheduled to begin on November 23, with a judge potentially having to decide whether an unaffected jury can be found. Political figures expressed concern that a collapse would severely damage RTÉ’s reputation and finances, particularly while the broadcaster is seeking further State support; the dispute also recalls the serious consequences of RTÉ’s 2011 “Mission to Prey” scandal.
