West Northamptonshire Council has approved its first Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS), a requirement under the Environment Act 2021 aimed at restoring the area's depleted habitats. The strategy will involve tree planting, wetland restoration, and drainage work to address wildlife decline and create healthier landscapes. This matters because a functional natural environment is essential for tackling climate change and providing vital services including clean water, food security, flood protection, and recreational spaces.

West Northamptonshire is currently one of England's "most nature-depleted areas," with wildlife sites that are small, in poor condition, and isolated from one another. The council is working with various partners, organisations, landowners, and local people to improve landscapes that face "unprecedented pressure." The strategy aims to create more robust, resilient habitats that will benefit both wildlife and communities by offering cleaner, greener spaces and opportunities for people to reconnect with nature.
