Sceye airship completes 15,000-kilometre Japan trip to test mobile coverage
Sceye’s uncrewed airship completed a round trip between New Mexico and Japan to demonstrate that a stratospheric platform could provide mobile connectivity. The test matters because such platforms could extend commercial coverage and restore communications during disasters, while remaining closer to Earth than satellites.
The airship launched on 9 August 2026 and travelled more than 15,000 kilometres to Japan in 13 days, navigating strong winds during typhoon season. It operates around 60,000 feet, using solar panels and batteries, and has carried payloads exceeding 100 kilograms; Sceye says a future version could provide coverage comparable to 500 ground-based mobile towers.
- Sceye’s airship crossed the Pacific to test a mobile network in the stratosphere.
- The 13-day journey covered more than 15,000 kilometres.
- The platform could support connectivity during disasters.
