A new trailer for Paramount Pictures and Legendary’s forthcoming Street Fighter film gives the first substantial look at Jason Momoa as Blanka, portraying the character as a feral, violent opponent forced upon Ryu by M. Bison. The footage suggests director Kitao Sakurai is embracing the franchise’s deliberately exaggerated and camp tone, rather than treating its fantastical characters and attacks as serious realism.

Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, is placed in a cage fight by David Dastmalchian’s M. Bison and faces Blanka, who electrocutes a prisoner and performs his signature Blanka Ball move. The trailer also references Street Fighter 2’s X-ray visual effect and includes a brief appearance by fighting-game creator Maximilian Dood; the film is due in cinemas on 16 October.

  • Jason Momoa’s Blanka appears as a violent, feral fighter.
  • The trailer leans heavily into Street Fighter’s campy style.
  • Street Fighter is scheduled for release on 16 October.
