Striker swaps Sunday league for Champions League
Manasse Kianga has gone from playing Sunday league football in South Yorkshire to helping Slovakian champions ŠK Slovan Bratislava qualify for the Champions League. The 24-year-old’s rise highlights the unexpected routes into elite football, after he was brought into Slovan’s first team during an injury crisis and scored a decisive late goal in qualifying.
Kianga moved to Rotherham around 2017 and studied business and accounting at Thomas Rotherham College, where he was a standout player but missed out on England schoolboy selection because he could not get a passport in time. He scored 51 goals in 115 appearances for ninth-tier Rossington Main, helping them win promotion in 2023 while also playing Sunday league football. Slovan have since used him for their reserves, and he may feature in the Champions League league phase alongside opponents including Roma and Inter Milan.

Slovan Bratislava are a football club in Slovakia and the country’s reigning champions. Winning the domestic league gives a team a route into Champions League qualifying, where clubs play a series of ties to try to reach the main competition.
Kianga grew up playing in South Yorkshire after moving to Rotherham as a teenager. He played for ninth-tier Rossington Main, a semi-professional club, while studying at college and also took part in Sunday league football.
His path shows how players can move between levels of the game through local clubs, reserves and first-team opportunities. Slovan’s place in the Champions League league phase would put the club among Europe’s leading sides, including Roma and Inter Milan.
