Sudan army drones hit mourners and fuel market killing more than 200 people, sources say

BBC World ·

Drone strikes in Sudan have reportedly killed more than 200 people, including mourners travelling to a funeral and people at a market. The attacks highlight the growing use of drones in the war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and risk worsening tensions with neighbouring South Sudan.

The Sudan War Observatory said 150 people were killed in strikes in West Kordofan on Sunday evening, including 145 on a truck carrying mourners and five at a funeral tent; around 150 others were injured. On Monday, 73 people were reported killed at a market in Abyei, a disputed area jointly administered by Sudan and South Sudan. A Sudanese military source said the army struck the market because it was an RSF fuel supply site; South Sudan has summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest. The UN says 20 million people face acute hunger as the war drives mass displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
