Rasheed Rahman, a 21-year-old Sudanese man who arrived in the UK hidden in a lorry, has been jailed for a minimum of 27 years for the random, unprovoked murder of grandfather Mark Carroll, 55, in a Camden park in April 2024. The case has drawn attention because Rahman had a documented history of violent offences in the weeks before the killing, yet was repeatedly allowed to remain at large, including being granted police bail just two days before the murder and being handed a kitchen knife by staff at his supported accommodation the day before he killed Mr Carroll.

In February 2024 Rahman broke a stranger's arm with a wooden club and stabbed him on a London bus; two days before the murder he attacked members of the public on a canal towpath but was bailed. He asked accommodation staff in Romford for a knife the night before the killing, carried it into London and stabbed Mr Carroll in Castlehaven Community Park before also threatening a man and robbing someone of their e-bike. Rahman, who had been granted temporary leave to remain after an asylum claim in 2023, was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court by Judge John Dodd KC, who ordered he be deported, with victim statements from Mr Carroll's daughters describing him as a devoted grandfather.
