Suno becomes first customer of Musixmatch’s Sentinel, which screens AI prompts and outputs for copyrighted material
Musixmatch has signed AI music generator Suno as the first customer of Sentinel, a copyright detection service that screens prompts and generated output for copyrighted compositions, lyrics and music. The deal is significant because it gives an AI music platform real-time visibility into potential copyright infringement, addressing mounting legal and regulatory pressure on generative AI tools amid tighter EU rules on labelling AI-generated content and ongoing industry concern over unlicensed use of copyrighted works.
Sentinel, launched by Musixmatch on 27 March, returns matching decisions in under 100 milliseconds, integrates via API, and is designed to meet EU AI Act and DMCA compliance requirements, drawing on a database used by more than 250,000 rights owners and publishers, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing and Warner Music Group. The announcement coincided with a Suno blog post from CEO Mikey Shulman stating the company has never allowed prompts for specific artists or copyrighted songs and works with Audible Magic, ACRCloud and Musixmatch to screen uploads; Musixmatch, backed by TPG Growth since 2022, also signed AI licensing deals with all three major music publishers in October 2025.
- Suno is the first company to adopt Musixmatch's Sentinel copyright screening tool.
- Sentinel checks AI prompts and outputs for copyrighted lyrics and music.
- Move follows new EU AI content labelling rules and industry licensing deals.
