A Munich court has ruled that AI music generator Suno infringed copyright by using music represented by Germany’s GEMA without permission. The decision strengthens pressure on generative-AI companies to secure licences for training material and compensate rightsholders, although Suno says it disagrees with the ruling and is considering an appeal.

The court ordered Suno to provide revenue information and pay damages, with the amount still to be determined. GEMA, which represents about 95,000 German members and more than two million rightsholders globally, argued that Suno generated tracks misleadingly similar to songs including Forever Young and Mambo No. 5; the case follows GEMA’s 2025 court success against OpenAI over song lyrics.
