Suno Tries to Break into Music Mainstream With New Label-Backed Model ‘v6’

Variety · 3 hours ago

Suno, the AI music generation company, has launched "V6," a new suite of models built on licensing deals with Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, marking a major push to gain acceptance within the music industry. The release incorporates revenue sharing for artists and labels, with chief product officer Jack Brody framing it as an effort to "grow the pie" for the industry rather than compete against it, though the company still faces significant scepticism from artists and ongoing legal challenges.

The V6 suite comprises three models rolling out from Wednesday: the flagship "v6" for Pro and Premier subscribers, which allows targeted edits like changing a single lyric and generation from text, audio, images or video; "v6-wild," a more unpredictable, exploratory variant for paid tiers; and "v6-mini," a free model Brody claims outperforms rivals' best paid offerings. The launch comes despite copyright infringement lawsuits from Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Round Hill Music, and after Mary J. Blige withdrew from an advertising partnership over an unauthorised deal. Suno is also developing a second product, a fan remixing tool with artist opt-in safeguards, similar to offerings from Hook and Spotify.
