Kelvin Harrison Jr. has revealed he is taking over the role of Beetee Latier in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping", the upcoming prequel that returns to Panem decades before Katniss Everdeen's story. The film requires recasting several beloved characters, including younger versions of Haymitch, Effie, Plutarch and Wiress alongside Beetee, with each actor tasked with honouring the established performances rather than imitating them. This matters because Harrison is stepping into a role previously defined by Jeffrey Wright across "Catching Fire" and the two "Mockingjay" films, and his approach to the handover offers insight into how the franchise is managing its generational recasting.

Speaking to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, Harrison explained he was initially nervous to tell Wright about the casting, partly because the pair already have several professional connections and he feared it might seem like he was following Wright's career. He eventually texted Wright, who responded warmly and, according to Harrison, was genuinely pleased for him. The two discussed Wright's original take on Beetee shortly before filming began, giving Harrison material to draw on as he developed his own version of the District 3 victor for the prequel.
