Sunrisers thump Fire to close in on qualification

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Sunrisers Leeds moved to the brink of qualifying for The Hundred's knockout stages after thrashing Welsh Fire by 71 runs at Headingley. The victory strengthens Sunrisers' hold on second place while leaving fifth-placed Fire needing further results and net run-rate to go their way to reach the finals.

Mitch Marsh hit a 34-ball 50 as Sunrisers posted 201-4, with an 89-run opening stand alongside Ryan Rickelton and late hitting from captain Zak Crawley, who struck four sixes in a 12-ball 34. In reply, Welsh Fire never got close, managing only 130-6, with Brydon Carse taking 3-24. Sunrisers now need only to avoid defeat against Manchester Super Giants on Tuesday to progress, and could even challenge leaders Trent Rockets for top spot. Fire, on 16 points, will likely need to beat London Spirit on Wednesday and rely on net run-rate to claim the final knockout place.
