CBS's crime drama "Evil" is being highlighted for combining the earnestness of early "Supernatural" with the intensity of a modern thriller like "Hannibal", following a trio of Catholic Church-appointed assessors as they investigate hauntings, miracles and possible demonic possessions. Though it began on network television, the series relocated to Paramount+ for its remaining three seasons, and it stands out as one of the more inventive procedurals to have aired in recent years.

The show follows skeptical forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), atheist technical expert Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) and priest-in-training David Acosta (Mike Colter), who bring conflicting worldviews to each case they investigate. Their role is to determine whether apparent supernatural events genuinely require Church intervention, such as an exorcism, or have a rational explanation, a premise that fuels much of the series' tension. What starts as a cerebral network procedural gradually deepens into a story more fully immersed in the demonic and supernatural, particularly after its move to streaming.
