The US Supreme Court set oral arguments in St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy for 3 November 2026. The case concerns Colorado’s universal preschool programme and whether the state may require participating religious schools to comply with admissions non-discrimination rules that the Catholic petitioners say conflict with their religious mission. The Court had agreed in April to review two questions arising from the dispute, including how courts determine whether a policy is generally applicable and when a state’s exclusion of religious institutions from public-benefit programmes is unconstitutional. The case is likely to examine the balance between religious exercise protections and state anti-discrimination requirements; no ruling has yet been made.

Separately, a section of a crane being assembled at a construction site in Brickell, Miami, twisted and fell into the pool area of the neighbouring One Plaza West Brickell condominium complex on 7 August. Miami Fire Rescue said the crane was not operating when the failure occurred. Officials accounted for all construction workers and searched the pool deck, finding no victims; no injuries were reported. City building and unsafe-structures officials, along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, were notified. Available reporting does not support the headline’s claim that workers were trapped in this incident.

  • The Supreme Court scheduled St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy for argument on 3 November.
  • The dispute centres on Colorado preschool funding, religious schools and admissions rules.
