Swansea fear serious injury to key man Burgess

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Swansea City fear centre-back Cameron Burgess may have sustained a serious Achilles injury during their 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Birmingham City. The 30-year-old was taken to hospital for scans after limping off late in the match, potentially disrupting Swansea’s preparations for the new Championship season.

Burgess had played every minute of league football since joining Swansea in summer 2025, but now looks doubtful for the opening fixture at Stoke City on 15 August. Head coach Vitor Matos said the club would await the assessment, with Stephen Welsh or Filip Lissah possible replacements; Swansea may also reconsider their plans to sign another centre-back if the injury is confirmed as serious.
