Sheffield Wednesday recovered from a poor first-half display to beat Salford City 2–1 in their EFL Trophy opener. Salford dominated early and deservedly led, but Wednesday’s improved second-half performance showed resilience and gave them a winning start despite missing several first-team players on international duty.

Ben Woodburn put Salford ahead in the 34th minute after earlier chances, including a shot against the bar. Davis Keillor-Dunn equalised from close range 10 minutes into the second half, before Jamal Lowe converted a penalty 13 minutes from time after Callum Slattery was fouled; the result leaves Wednesday preparing to face Sunderland Under-21s on 6 October.
