Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday's opponents on the opening day of the new League One season, have signed defender Alfie Gilchrist on loan from West Bromwich Albion. The 22-year-old right-back spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, where he impressed enough to earn praise from Blades manager Chris Wilder, whose endorsement was echoed by Orient boss Richie Wellens in unveiling the signing.

Gilchrist made 30 Championship appearances for Sheffield United in 2024/25 while on loan from Chelsea, before West Brom signed him permanently and then sent him out again, making 15 appearances there prior to his move to Orient. Wellens said Wilder had spoken highly of both Gilchrist's defensive qualities and his character, describing him as someone who presses aggressively, has good pace and wins first contacts, while the player himself said he was excited to join, having watched matches at Orient when younger. Sheffield Wednesday open their League One campaign away at Leyton Orient, who have also recently beaten Oxford United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.
