BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Iga Swiatek won her first WTA title of the season by defeating Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the Canadian Open final in Toronto. The victory ends a difficult spell for the Polish player, who said online criticism had been hard to manage, and gives her momentum before the US Open.

Swiatek beat world number two Rybakina 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes, securing her 26th career title and a return to the world’s top five. Rybakina made 23 unforced errors, while Swiatek won five of the final six games; Britain’s Katie Boulter also progressed in Cincinnati, and Ben Shelton retained the men’s Canadian Open title.
